Job Description The Composites center of excellence (COE) in Core Technology is seeking an energetic and hands-on polymer scientist who is excited to develop, apply and communicate predictive understanding of our fluoropolymer composites. This individual will champion technology development efforts that are aligned with global Enterprise needs and the strategic vectors of our technical community. In this role, you will support the overall Core Technology COE function by developing new material capabilities to fuel potential new growth for the Enterprise through knowledge driven material solutions and exploratory research within Core Technology. This position is located in Elkton, Maryland. The ideal candidate will:

While the role and responsibilities will vary based on business priorities, they include:
* Scope, initiate and rapidly execute on exploratory research projects within the COE community. * Developing, characterizing, and understanding valuable and unique polymer composites * Identifying gaps in our materials capability * Demonstrating predictive understanding of material properties and performance * Explaining the behavior of new polymers and composites through the use of empirical data and knowledge of polymer physics * Identifying and developing advanced characterization and analytical techniques for composite materials * Influencing the material selection decisions for new product development efforts across the Enterprise * Successful communication of a deep understanding of our materials to Associates * Working and collaborating across Core Technology groups and downstream businesses to support new product development, prototyping, and exploratory research efforts
Required Job Qualifications:
* Ph.D. in polymer science and engineering, polymer physics, materials science, chemical or mechanical engineering, or a related field * Demonstrated success as a principle investigator (an ability to set project direction, assemble appropriate team, attack the root cause of problems, build fundamental understanding, concisely communicate progress, and bring a project to closure) * Proven success working within an interdisciplinary team * Capable of working effectively within multiple teams globally, including virtual collaboration * Proven ability to initiate and complete investigations at a quick pace * Capable of assessing a technology and identifying gaps and opportunities * Advanced understanding of polymer physics that includes experimental confirmation * Working knowledge of viscoelasticity * Capable of explaining the mechanical behavior of polymers using a balanced approach of empirical and theoretical tools * A proven track record for developing empirical models * Solid knowledge of polymer characterization techniques and analysis * Hands-on approach to research and results oriented * Skilled in experimental design and data analysis * Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to teach a technically diverse audience using formal and informal techniques * Willingness to sign confidentiality agreement * Ability to travel up to 10%
Desired Job Qualifications:
* Experience using a variety of polymer characterization techniques, such as (DMA, TMA, mechanical testing, DSC, TGA, XRD, SAXS, FTIR, Raman, SEM, and TEM) * Experience applying principles of fracture mechanics, constitutive modeling, fatigue, and composite toughening * Experience with fluoropolymer-based product development * Experience with polymer processing * Post-degree industrial experience
