The Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering at The University of Iowa (https://bme.engineering.uiowa.edu/) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track faculty appointment with an anticipated start date of Fall 2020. Our department seeks visionary individuals who are integrating engineering, biological sciences, and translational medicine to promote scientific discovery and the development of clinical technologies that advance healthcare. We aim to enhance the department’s integrative research and educational programs by hiring a core faculty member with research and teaching expertise in the areas of respiratory and pulmonary bioengineering. We are particularly interested in candidates developing and using microfluidic and micro electromechanical systems, organ-on-a-chip devices, and/or single-cell sequencing techniques with applications in the respiratory system and to pulmonary disorders.
The rank of assistant professor is targeted, but all ranks will be considered. Applicants are expected to have a doctoral degree in biomedical engineering or a related discipline.
The Roy J. Carver Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Iowa is experiencing a period of unprecedented growth, having doubled our undergraduate student body over the past five years. A recent philanthropic gift to the department from the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust has provided resources to hire several new faculty members, rapidly increase the size of the doctoral program, and develop new research foci in the areas of respiratory and pulmonary biomedical engineering.
The successful candidate is expected to develop an internationally recognized research program, to participate in the teaching and service missions of the department, and to follow the University of Iowa’s strong tradition of collaboration across disciplines. The ideal candidate will demonstrate robust communication, teaching, and leadership skills to the benefit of our department’s mission. A strong commitment to graduate and undergraduate teaching and advising is essential. Teaching responsibilities will include participation in and development of both undergraduate and graduate courses and strong engagement in a core curriculum that serves to define bioengineering for future generations. The supervision of doctoral students and academic advising of trainees at all levels is also expected.
