The Department of Plant Science at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time tenure track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in the area of plant genomics and genetics. The candidate will lead a research program in Brassica genetics and genomics, and conduct both basic and applied research in the same area. The position start date is January 1, 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter. Salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
Qualifications: The successful candidate must have a B.Sc. in Agriculture or equivalent, a Ph.D. in plant molecular biology/genomics/genetics, and relevant Post-doctoral experience. Preference will be given to candidates with Brassica research experience, and bioinformatics and gene editing capability. The candidate must demonstrate a commitment to teaching excellence, including success in training of graduate students, a strong research and publication record, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, ability to attract external research funds, and evidence of collaboration. A proven track record in conducting field and controlled environment research with strength in experimental design and analysis is preferable.
Responsibilities: The successful candidate must be able to teach at the diploma, undergraduate degree, and graduate degree levels in the areas of genetics, plant breeding and molecular biology. Training of graduate students, post-docs, research associates and research technicians is required. The position requires the development and maintenance of a strong externally funded research program that addresses basic and applied science related to plant genetics. The candidate is expected to work collaboratively with other faculty members and with scientists at other research institutions, both nationally and internationally. Participation and leadership in interdisciplinary research teams is expected. The candidate is expected to contribute to service activities including service on committees at all levels within the University of Manitoba and external activities as appropriate. Interaction with producers, industry partners, extension specialists, provincial and federal government representatives and regulators is required.
Additional Information: Researchers in the Department have access to excellent research infrastructure and facilities, including the Ian N. Morrison Research Farm, a 406-acre facility located 70 km southwest of Winnipeg; and the Glenlea Research Station, a 1,000-acre facility 20 km south of Winnipeg, as well as successful cooperation with farmers for siting field trials across Manitoba.
