The Engineering Division of the Public Works Department is seeking qualified candidates to be considered for the Assistant Traffic Engineer position who are highly motivated and who strive for success by demonstrating Charlottesville's Core Values of Leadership, Trust, Creativity, Respect, and Excellence.
The Assistant Traffic Engineer performs a broad range of municipal traffic engineering and transportation planning tasks in the Public Works Department. Reports to the City Traffic Engineer. Work is performed under regular supervision; supervision is exercised over subordinate technical and clerical personnel. Primarily and most frequently the work done is performed independently, with diverse functional areas and more specialization and ability to train others.
The hiring salary will be between $47,191.51 and $61,963.20 annually. Starting offer is based on applicable education, experience, and internal equity. This is a full-time, exempt, position. Performs independent work in the areas of: design, capacity analysis, traffic safety, neighborhood traffic management and traffic calming, street/sidewalk closures and inspections, bike and pedestrian master plan implementation, site development review, traffic signal studies, permit parking management, liaison with utility companies, street sign management, traffic modeling and optimization using traffic engineering software and other techniques.

Responds to inquiries from the public regarding related activities;

Performs related tasks as required.
Minimum Qualifications:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in traffic engineering, civil engineering, urban planning or transportation planning is required. (Minimally, a high school diploma or GED equivalency with relevant work experience required.);

Virginia Intermediate Training Certification for work zone safety or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire;

Requires a valid driver's license and must meet the city's driver eligibility requirements;

Experience working with computers in a Windows environment (Microsoft software);

Experience in communicating and working effectively with citizen groups, committees, commissions, and/or the general public.
