This position is a 100% research, 12-month, non-tenure appointment with Mississippi State University located in the National Center for Alluvial Aquifer Research at the Delta Research and Extension Center in Stoneville, MS with academic affiliation in the Department of Agricultural and Biological Engineering at Mississippi State University. The incumbent will pursue an innovative and comprehensive research program with a focus on the interaction between producer decisions related to irrigation practices, availability and use of alternative water sources, and the groundwater status and trends of the Mississippi River Valley Alluvial (MRVA) Aquifer. The function of the position will be to develop, coordinate, and implement research programs that contribute to improving MRVA aquifer dynamics and agricultural impacts in the Mississippi Delta. The incumbent will develop and maintain close working relationships with all facets of the agricultural industry including producers, commodity groups, governmental agencies, USDA-ARS, USGS, YMD, stakeholders, Mississippi Agricultural and Forestry Experiment Station (MAFES) researchers, Extension specialists and agents (MSU-ES), and others to ensure water research programs are focused on the most pressing needs of the stakeholders. The incumbent will work as part of a multidisciplinary research and Extension team focused on water use in agricultural systems.
The incumbent will be expected to develop a regionally and nationally recognized research program in hydrological/water resources engineering and will be expected to secure extramural funding to support research activities.
Earned Ph.D. or doctorate in Agricultural Engineering, Biosystems Engineering, Hydrological Engineering, Civil Engineering, or other appropriate discipline from an accredited institution of higher learning is required. Individuals who are ABD (all but dissertation) will be considered. Acceptable candidate must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills, and be familiar with agricultural production, experimental design, and statistical analysis.
Strong background in agricultural water use issues, in particular those related to aquifer research and impacts of agricultural production. Demonstrated or potential for excellence in research, securing extramural funding, and scholarly publication. Experience in one or more areas such as groundwater monitoring and modeling, water budget estimation including regional recharge estimates, managed aquifer recharge, unsaturated zone processes, surface water-groundwater interactions and dynamics, and alternative water supply evaluation. Familiarity with irrigated agriculture and irrigation systems is desirable. Demonstrated ability to work in collaboration with other scientists, and research teams as well as with commercial crop growers is desirable. Ability to obtain a PE licensure is preferred.
