GENERAL INFORMATION:
The City of Ames Electric Services Department has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Director of Electric Services to provide support to the City's Electric Services Department!
Under the direction of the Director of Electric Services, promotes Excellence Through People throughout the utility; coordinates activities of divisions; supervises division heads; serves as the Director's chief assistant and as Electric Director in their absence.
Assists Director of Electric Utility in the overall management and operation of the municipal electric utility, has direct responsibility for overall daily operations of the utility; performs related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Coordinates the activities of assigned electric divisions, including administrative direction and oversight of personnel, budget, operations, and special projects. Works with Electric Director to develop programs and operational efficiencies. Analyzes current or potential utility operations and recommends courses of action to the Electric Director. Assists the Electric Director with strategic planning, including determining long and short-term needs of the utility and recommending programs and solutions. Assists in development of annual electric budget and Capital Improvements Plan. Provides both leadership and support during disasters or other emergencies following the Incident Command system. Appears before groups and organizations as a utility representative to explain activities, programs, and policies. Serves on management team during collective bargaining. Supervises and evaluates heads of assigned divisions. Manages day-to-day operations of the department, including the direct supervision of division heads. Assists Electric Director in selection of division heads. Performs other duties as required.

Other Job Functions: Oversee the preparation of reports on plant and system operations and costs required by the Electric Director or regulatory authorities.
Selection Process:
The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience, phone interview, on-site interview, and completion of a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check. All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.

The City of Ames has a compensation philosophy that the starting pay for our merit salary ranges establishes the salary for employees who meet minimum requirements of a position. The median of any merit salary range is for an employee who can reasonably meet all expectations of the position responsibilities without initial extensive training. In order for employees to have an opportunity to grow within their position, we consider a candidate's education, experience, and skills above the minimum requirements when looking at a salary closer to the median. The median for this position is $70.92 per hour/$147,515 per year.

QUALIFICATIONS:
-Bachelor’s degree in electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering or related engineering degree.
-Six years of professional experience, two of which must have been with an electric generating plant, similar plant, or electric utility.
-At least three years of experience in preparing and monitoring budgets.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Considerable knowledge of modern steam generating powerplants; considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of electrical or mechanical engineering; considerable knowledge of the principles, practices, methods, materials, systems, and equipment used in the generation, transmission and distribution of electrical energy; knowledge of electrical utility organization and management; knowledge of all safety rules as are standard in the industry.
Considerable skill in the planning and coordination of various generating, distributing, engineering and servicing functions of an electrical utility; considerable skill in interpreting utility operations data and identifying areas of potential improvements; skill in administering the union contract(s); skill in administering the department budget.

SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Physical and Environmental Characteristics
General Physical Characteristics: The work involves sitting 90 percent of the time; standing and walking 10 percent of the time; frequently lifting objects under 10 pounds; and infrequently lifting objects from 10 to 25 pounds.
Vision Requirements: The minimum standard for use with those whose work deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures, accounting, transcription, computer terminal, extensive reading, visual inspection involving small defects or parts, and use of measurement devices or assembly of parts at distances close to the eyes.
